Rhododendron

Plant of the Month: Rhododendron and Azaleas

Rhododendron is a large genus of woody plants that are either evergreen or deciduous. Most species originate from eastern Asia and the Himalayas, although some types can also be found in North America, Europe, and Australia. The genus name comes from the Greek words meaning “rose tree,” and with good reason: they usually have brightly colored flowers (usually in purple, pink, white, and cream) that bloom even in late winter and all through early summer.

Winterberry

Plant of the Month: Winterberry

Winterberry holly is a deciduous shrub that is native to the eastern part of North America. It brightens up a dreary landscape because this plant produces bright globose red berries that are able to withstand the winter weather. Winterberry is also associated with the Christmas holiday and is used to adorn evergreen decorations (e.g. wreaths) to add some color. It is also special because it is a dioecious plant, which means that there are male and female plants.
